Everyone recognizes that a fireplace screen must foremost prevent
sparks from escaping the fireplace. But it should be acknowledged
that it becomes the focal point of the fireplace just as the fireplace
is the focal point of the room. A screen should be sized so as
not to dominate the view. It should have sufficient focal interest
to help make the fireplace attractive without the fire burning.
Further consideration must be given to whether the screen style
aids or interferes with the mechanics of managing a fire.

Screen Design Hints:
a. Consider an arched top, three panel
screen for a rectangular fireplace. It adds character and softens
the square lines of the opening.
b. A screen with an intricate design adds much to the beauty
of a fireplace without distracting from the view of the burning
fire.
c. Many designers have begun using
andirons or decorative grates along with a plain screen to capture
the viewers interest.
